Diana Gillespie, Music Director

It is my pleasure to be a part of mission work through the creative and performing arts here at Cumberland! I hope to bring my background in school and church music to the dedicated Cumberland Arts staff here at Cumberland First Baptist Church as we provide artistic and mission-oriented programming to our church and community.

Prior to serving as choral director at Carmel High School, I was the music specialist at various elementary schools in southern and central Indiana for 22 years. Specializing in the Kodaly Method of teaching music literacy and singing, I have enjoyed serving in American Baptist Churches throughout southern and central with my husband, Tim. I hold a BME, with piano cognate, from Indiana University, and have completed all coursework for an MME from Indiana University as well.

I received my first Kodaly Certification under Dr. Jean Sinor at Indiana University, and currently serve as President of Indiana Kodaly Educators (IKE). After receiving my second Certification from the Indiana Summer Kodaly Institute, I have been on staff at IU Bloomington Kodaly Institute, teaching pedagogy and solfege. I have also taught Kodaly training courses at Indiana University Purdue University, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and have presented workshops regionally and nationally on topics such as folk music research, in-tune singing techniques for children, folk dance and creative movement, and children’s choirs in school and church.

I am a member of the Indiana Orff Schulwerk Association (IOSA), MENC, IMEA, and AOSA, and currently serve on the Advisory Council for the Organization of American Kodaly Educators (OAKE).

I have served as assistant director/Kodaly instructor for the Indianapolis Children's Choir, and am currently active as choral clinician for Indiana Circle the State with Song. I enjoy tennis, walking, Scrabble, plays, and Broadway musicals. I am thrilled to be a part of the Cumberland Arts staff!

Ministry means the ongoing attempt to put one's own search God, with all the moments of pain and joy, despair and hope at the disposal at those who want to join this search but do not know how. -- Henri Nouwen
